NEIGHBORHOOD: Pillar of Japanese streetwear with biker DNA

If you’re navigating the world of premium street fashion, the Japanese brand NEIGHBORHOOD (often stylized as NBHD) is no stranger to you. Founded in 1994 in Tokyo's Harajuku district by visionary Shinsuke Takizawa, it has become one of the cornerstones of global streetwear. Alongside brands like WTAPS, Undercover, and A Bathing Ape (BAPE), it played a pivotal role in the birth of the legendary subcultural movement Ura-Harajuku, which forever changed the rules of modern fashion.

In our e-shop Footshop, we bring you an exclusive selection of this iconic Japanese brand, which masterfully combines uncompromising quality, a darker aesthetic, and deep cultural references.

From motorcycles and punk to premium fashion

Founder Shinsuke Takizawa, fascinated by Western subculture, motorcycles, punk rock, and military aesthetics, infused his personal passions directly into the brand's DNA. NEIGHBORHOOD was not born as a commercial project responding to trends – it emerged as an expression of a specific lifestyle.

While Western streetwear of that time primarily focused on the skate community and hip-hop, NEIGHBORHOOD introduced a dark, rebellious undertone. The collections are deeply inspired by:

• Custom-bike scene and the aesthetics of motorcycle gangs from the 60s and 70s.
• Military functional wear with an emphasis on practical details and durability.
• Premium American workwear and vintage denim.

The brand's slogan "CRAFT WITH PRIDE" precisely defines its approach to craftsmanship. Each piece of clothing undergoes a meticulous processing journey, from selecting top-notch Japanese materials to iconic aging and distressing techniques.

Brand Icons: Savage Denim and Incense Chambers

When NEIGHBORHOOD is mentioned, collectors and fashion enthusiasts immediately think of two things: denim and ceramics.

1. Savage Denim: This denim line made NBHD famous worldwide. Their jeans labeled Savage are hand-finished, distressed, repaired, and aged to look like an authentic, well-worn piece from a motorcycle workshop. The details and structure of Japanese selvedge denim are an artistic masterpiece in this rendition.

2. Ceramic Incense Chambers: NEIGHBORHOOD has pushed the boundaries of streetwear into the realm of interior design. Their ceramic incense holders, often shaped like revolvers, skulls, predators, or hands with pop culture motifs, are now highly sought-after collector's items that disappear within seconds.

The brand is also known for its massive collaborations. In the past, it has teamed up with giants like adidas, Supreme, Vans, Converse, Carhartt WIP, and prestigious artists. These limited drops regularly shake the entire community.
